How to Create Animated Images with PaintCAD

Just as Idesigner is one of the best graphics tool for Symbian/S60, so also paintCAD still remains the best image editor for Java/S40 devices.
Among the long list of the functionality of paintCAD, we’re gonna discuss how to create animated gif images.

This animated gif image below was actually created with paintCAD.

An animated gif image created with paintCAD
Since some mobile browsers are static, you might not see the animated effect (if you are on mobile) except you download the image and view it on your phone.

How to Pack Animated Gif Images with PaintCAD

Before I we continue, let me throw a speck of light on animated gif images. An animated gif image is primarily composed of a set of images (called frames) that is packed to a single gif image. For the animation to take effect, it displays the first frame, the second, the third, and continues to the last frame, them it starts afresh.
So what paintCAD actually does is to pack the frames (in gif format) to a single gif and thus it’s animated.
Also note that paintCAD cannot pack gif images it didn’t create or save.

Fire up paintCAD, and select 8bpp mode. Create a new image or open an existing one — the first frame. Mine is just a text as you can see below:

Screenshot of the first frame

Press “0” (zero) > Save > GIF, and save it as 1.gif.

Next, create/open the second image — the second frame.

Screenshot of the second frame

This time, save it to 2.gif

Create the subsequent frames and save it to gif format as 3.gif, 4.gif, 5.gif … 10.gif, etc — it doesn’t have limit to the number of images allowed. For example mine is 12.

When you’re done with creating the images, press “0” (zero), press the right navigation key twice and select “Pack aniGIF”.

PaintCAD'S main menu

Navigate to the folder where you saved the images previously and select it.

Packing the gif images

Press Options and select “In this folder”.
Now, write the name you want the animated image to be saved to and ok it.

Now, paintCAD will display the number of frames, press Ok to trigger the packing process.
The packed gif file is usually saved in the folder containing the just packed images.

How to Unpack Animated Gif Images with PaintCAD

Apart from packing animated gif images as we did above, paintCAD can also be used to unpack gif images.

To do this, press “0” (in the painting window), the right navigation key twice and select “Unpack aniGIF”. See the screenshot here.
Select the gif file to be unpacked. The unpacked images is usually saved in the last opened folder or E root.

How to Make Opera Mini Exit Dialog Box Fullscreen

In my previous post, I wrote extensively on Opera Mini 7.1 skinning but now, I wanna share with you, how to make an Opera Mini Exit dialogue box full page.

Opera Mini Fullscreen exit dialog box

While the first screenshot is that of the usual exit dialog box, the second and third screenshot is that of fullscreen dialog box. Now, let’s see how we can make that dialog box fullscreen.

How to Make Opera Mini Dialog Box Fullscreen

Open locale-ri.rsc with MobilHex, select “Operamini translator” plugin and press right selection key.

Mobilhex Opera Mini translator plugin
If your mobilhex doesn’t have Opera Mini translator plugin, download it here, and install it into the drive you installed your mobilhex.

Click 5 (five), pause for the app to load the file afterwhich you press left selection key and in the textfield, enter “Are you sure?” for english users but if you’re using another language like indonesian, search for “Apa Anda yakin?” or the corresponding text on the exit dialog box.
Press “Ok” and it’ll bring up the search results. Click on it.

If it’s the version of Opera Mini prior to version 7, you can click the enter key, ↵ and continue clicking until you get satisfied with the page height; but if it’s Opera Mini versions 7s, you shouldn’t do this else you’ll find triangular boxes on the exit dialog (especially on phones using non-unicode fonts). Instead, continue clicking the space button until the page height is okay with you.

When you do any of the above, you get the result in the second screenshot but you can also replace the spaces with texts like I did here:

Editing the dialog box with mobihex this would make the dialog box look like that in the third screenshot.

When you’re through with the writings, Ok it, exit MobilHex, and test the result.
That’s all. Any question or suggestion?

How to Change Opera Mini 7.1 Font Colours

Having gotten the hex location of the font colours, we’ll put them into use now.

As an example, I’ll edit the background of the speed dial, the hexloc is 0x30c8.

Fire up Mobihex and open skin-qvga-multi.rsc with it. Press Menu > Go to … > position, enter 0x30c8 in the textfield and ok it.

Changing the hexloc of Sd bg

Press the left navigation key to scroll to the left (i.e the center column). The last three pairs of hex values in that row (i.e ff ff ff) is what I’m gonna change.

How to change the hexloc of Sd bg

MUST READ: How to Change Opera Mini Speed Dial Thumbnails

Now, the hex value of the colour I want use is 3196fe. So I clicked on the first ff and changed it to 31, the second ff to 96 and the last ff to fe. Having done this, I exited Mobihex and opened my Opera Mini to test the result. See it here:

So that’s how you’re gonna edit the font colours. Good luck.

Tutorial: Detailed Skinning of Opera Mini 7.1 (Part 1)

Since I published the modded edition of Opera Mini 7. 1 (Opera Mini 7.1 valentine edition with launcher) there’s been a constant request for the tutorial of Opera Mini 7.1 skinning. So by popular demand, I’ve decided to write an article on it.

We’re gonna need Opera Mini advanced skin editor for embedding & dumping, Opera Mini 7.1 Qvga skin and some image editors like: idesigner, pic 2 pic, and maybe image jointer. Please, make sure you already have the fore-knowledge of Opera Mini skinning before proceeding. If you don’t, please, check the full tutorial here.

How to Create A Stack of Papers with HTML/CSS

I am very sure you know what a stack of papers means. Well, well — if you don’t, it’s just a pile of neatly arranged papers.

A stack of papers

Now, we’re gonna do something like that with HTML/CSS. You might not need a professional knowledge of web designing since it’s self explanatory.
Two CSS3 tags: box-shadow and border-radius does the major trick.

PAPER 1

A stack of papers created and styled with HTML/CSS. This is the text on the paper.

PAPER 2

Looks more like a book with a cover, title and rounded corners.

The sad truth is, this stack of papers isn’t support in most mobile browsers; so your might just be seeing a 150×200 rectangler shape if you’re on a mobile browser.

Tell me, what are you seeing on your browser?

Nokia S40 and S60: How to Wirelessly Perform Software Update

Updating Nokia Java/S40 and Symbian/S60 softwares upgrades the phone to the best services, and features. For example when Nokia C1-01 was first released way back in 2010; it doesn’t support third party themes but with a later update of the software, this feature was then supported.

Why Carry-out Software Update?

Carrying-out Software Update achieves the following:

1. Your phone will have the latest Nokia apps and services
2. Improved functions and performance of the phone
3. If you’ve forgotten your security code, updating the software resets it to default (12345) — at least it did on my Nokia X2-02.

How to Update Wirelessly

To update the phone software, you either do it via Nokia Suite on PC or wirelessly on your phone. I’ll be talking about the latter.

Nokia Phone Software Update

Before updating the phone, it’s pertinent that you note the following:
1. Ensure that the phone is fully charged, or charging.
2. It’s advicable you create a backup before proceeding.
3. Do not attempt to switch off or operate the phone during installation except when prompted.
4. Set the time and date of the phone correctly as this is used to detect new software version.
5. Ensure that the phone has a good internet connection, wifi is recommended.
6. Do not be in haste to click any button during the installation, read through the prompt and make sure you understand it before okaying/negating it.

Process…

NOTE: I used Nokia X2-02 (s40) and 6730 classic (s60) for practicalization.

1. On s40, go to Menu > Settings > Device > Device updates, and select “Downl. device sw.” Accept the request for internet connection. It’ll connect to Nokia and display the something like this:

Update available
from NOKIA
Size: 1143 KB
Approximate
installation time: Less than 20 minutes
Description: Software
update

Click on the center D-pad to download the software. It’ll take a couple of minutes to download afterwhich it’ll prompt to proceed with the installation. Proceed and follow the wizard through the rest of the installation process.

2. While on s60, press *#0000# on your home screen, press Options and check for updates; then follow the wizard.

The update takes time, my updating of Nokia X2-02 took approximately 20 minutes after which the phone rebooted. My settings, apps, photos, text messages and files in the phone and memory card wasn’t deleted at the end of the update; and I believe yours would be kept save too.

20 Constructive Tools Every Blogger Should Know About

Blogging can be quite a process if we consider all the stages that precede blog post publishing. You need to research your topics, collect ideas and put your thoughts together to create an interesting and useful content, then also take care of proper optimization, share the posts on popular social websites so others will find them and hopefully share with their social networks. Luckily for us, this difficult process of organizing and finishing all these activities can be significantly eased with the use of today’s Web and technology.

20 tools every blogger should know about

There are tons of different tools, apps or browser extensions you can use on a daily basis to help your blogging process and make it less of a headache, and here are some of the best:

1. Gmail

If you have more email addresses you can connect them all to your Gmail account to check and send emails from different accounts but from only one place. You can organize your emails in different categories using labels to easier find the communications you need; store the emails you’ve already replied to in the archive; and use stars to highlight the important emails you can’t miss. What’s also great about Gmail is that every single email is backed up free of charge, so you don’t have to ever change your email address if you switch Internet Service Providers or move overseas. Moreover, you can easily send, receive, and reply emails on gmail as sms.

2. Google Calendar

As part of Gmail you can use Google Calendar to set reminders for the appointments and other events you have ahead so you won’t forget to attend them. As you develop your blog, you’ll have more and more things on your mind, and the calendar can help you forget about them until the moment they are due, or at least till the time and date you’ve set. You can not only create events and schedule meetings but you can also quickly and easily invite others to come and join you. You’ll find Google Calendar very useful for personal reminders also.

3. WordPress

It’s not that there aren’t any other blogging platforms, but WordPress certainly is one of the best. It’s a bit harder to get started at first, but considering the wide possibilities this platform can offer for developing your blog in the future, it’s definitely worth the time and effort investment. You can start on other easier platforms like Blogspot, but keep in mind that switching them later is much harder and can even cost you some of your regular readers, so the faster you change to WordPress the better. If you are just getting started, don’t go anywhere else; go for wordpress.

4. Google Analytics

Together with Alexa and other web information websites, you can track the important metrics on your blog with Google Analytics. It’s a great tool you can easily connect with your blog and follow which posts are most popular among your readers, from what websites they come from, what are their demographic characteristics, and other statistics which you can later share with advertisers and sponsors in your media kit.

5. Dropbox

With Dropbox you don’t have to worry about losing your important files and backing up your work. This tool will help you sync important documents between your computer and smart phone so they’re always with you, wherever you go. There’s a Dropbox app for almost any device, and they are even further integrated with other apps. When you sign in you get 2GB of space for free, and you can build up to 18GB with referrals.

6. We Transfer

You can use Dropbox for sending files, or you can try We Transfer for that purpose. Each time there are some large PowerPoint presentations or videos that you can’t email, you can transfer them using this free tool (free for your starting needs, at least).

7. Google Drive

Google Docs is a web-based word processor that’s now fully integrated within Google Drive. You can not only save your work here to access it anytime and from absolutely any place where there’s an Internet connection, but you can also create these documents on the go, collaborate with other writers in real time, create free online surveys with results shown in pie charts, etc. And yes, all your work is saved online.

8. Zemanta

Zemanta is a browser and server-side plugin that works on the side of your blog editor and analyzes your typed words to then recommend photos, links, tags and related articles that you can use for your blog content. This tool features more than 200 million images from Wikimedia Commons, Flickr and other stock photo providers, all with proper licensing, and can truly help you enrich your blog posts and make them more interesting for your readers.

9. Veeeb

If you are using WordPress, or Drupal blogging platform, you can integrate the unique editor Veeeb to scan your blog content for significant keywords using a process called “semantic text analysis” and suggest relevant media and links that you can then drag right into your posts, or store for later use. Thanks to the integrated search you can also look for more information on the topic you cover in the blog post.

10. Open Office

Open Office is a word processing, spreadsheet and database management software, a free source alternative to Microsoft Office for which you have to pay. If you are at the beginning stages with your blogging, you could probably use any opportunity there is to not have to pay for the tools or services you need. This is certainly one of them.

11. Quora

To get creatively inspired when writing your new content, you can use Quora – a questions and answers website where real people exchange opinions on absolutely any topic. You can search topics related to your industry and targeted keywords, or ask questions to get ideas and answers from other people, some of them experts in their fields. In the direction of building a brand for your blog name online you can also answer other users’ questions and possibly interest them to come and visit your blog and read more.

12. Google Reader

Google Reader can also help boost your creativity and inspiration by following other blogs related to your niche that you feel are worthy of your attention, reading their content regularly and thinking of the ways you can implement their great ideas in your own blogging. Instead of visiting those websites one by one, you can read them all in the Reader’s panel.

13. Evernote

But ideas do not always come when you are ready. Often the best things pop to our minds when we are out there exploring the world and living the days. Here’s where Evernote comes into play. With this app you can capture absolutely anything, including web pages, images, text and voice notes, save them to be accessed later from any device, computer or smartphone, and search them when you need to find information fast.

14. Pocket

When researching for our blog post or looking for inspiration online we often get to pages we want to read but don’t have time, or simply can’t at the moment. Pocket, or formerly Read It Later, is a great blogging tool which can help you save those pages for reading them later, and since the service has various applications and integrations, you can access these pages anytime and from anywhere you are. This tool is a great time-saver because you can store here absolutely anything you see online and then check it when you have more time for that task.

15. SEO Blogger

Keywords are important in SEO. With SEO Blogger you can find the best keywords to use in your blog post without even leaving the blogging platform. You can do a keyword research, compare your own keywords with others, see how popular they are, and also keep track of your keyword density and properly optimize your content from the moment you start creating it.

16. Hootsuite

In today’s social world you cannot expect visits (or not some significant ones that come from outside your personal friends and family) if you aren’t present on some of the popular social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, you name it. The social media management tool Hootsuite will help you manage all your social accounts from only one dashboard, and what’s also great, you can add up to two RSS feeds to auto-tweet blog posts, both your own and on other blogs, in the free version. You can see if the results you get show it is worthy investing the monthly fee for the professional version.

17. Mailchimp

With the Mailchimp email management system you can easily keep track of the subscribers you get from your marketing efforts or check how many of your sent emails actually get opened. With this tool you can also design your own email newsletters and share them on different social networks. For mailing lists up to 2,000 subscribers, which should be enough for new bloggers, the service is free, while others should pay a monthly fee.

18. Rapportive

Rapportive is a free add-on for your Gmail account that allows you to see the Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts of your email contacts, right inside your inbox. Your social connections are very important and this tool will make you look like a consummate professional adding friends on Facebook, following on Twitter, and connecting with your readers on LinkedIn, and doing it all from one place, without leaving Gmail.

19. Ping-O-Matic

With Ping-O-Matic you can update the search engines and let them know you’ve posted new content on your blog. The services they offer are regularly updated and you can select the ones where you want to ping your blog. You can ping directly from the website or use the bookmarklet. You know there’s no use of your blog posts if the search engines don’t know about them.

20. My Hours

If you have a problem with procrastination you might also need a reliable time management tool like My Hours. You can significantly increase your productivity if you closely follow how you spend your time while working (and after) and locating the tasks that take you more time than they should to focus on their correction. With this tool you’ll easily work out where all those hours in the day disappear and make steps towards using your time more efficiently.

How to Customize a 404 Error Page on Blogger Blogs

What happens when you follow a broken or dead link? Of course, your browser can’t fetch the contents of that page because it doesn’t (or no longer) exist. Instead, the website hosting server will generate an error page informing you that that page was not found or no longer exists. That error page is called HTTP 404 error page.
HTTP 404 error pages comes in assorted forms because it’s tweaked by the site owner, so s/he writes just about anything. That’s that for now as I don’t intend to digress.

404 Error-Page not found

Just like search description, blogger allows you to customize the 404 error page of your blog.

How to Customize Your Blogger Blog 404 Error Page

Go to Settings> Search preferences, on your blogger dashboard. Click “Edit” next to “Custom Page Not Found”. Now, copy and paste the code below into the text field. Afterwards, hit “Save changes” button.

404 Error – Page Not Found

Whoops! It looks like you probably mistyped the url or clicked a broken/dead link. The requested URL was not found on this server. That’s all we know. Please go to home page.

So, when a broken/dead URL (with your blog’s URL host) is clicked, it should display this:

404 Error – Page Not Found

Whoops! It looks like you probably mistyped the url or clicked a broken/dead link. The requested URL was not found on this server. That’s all we know. Please go to home page.

Note that you can write just about anything (maximum of 10k characters), but try to keep it short and simple.

To reduce bounce rate and as path of online SEO, I added a sitemap widget to the 404 error page. Click here to see what it looks like.

To add the site map widget, copy and paste this code instead of the first one:

404 Error – Page Not Found

Whoops! It looks like you probably mistyped the url or clicked a broken/dead link. The requested URL was not found on this server. That’s all we know. Please go to home page or check any of these articles if it matches what you were looking for. http://yourjavascript.com/30112272102/wilbersoft-sitemap-widget.jshttp://YOUR%20BLOG%20URL%20HERE/feeds/posts/default?max-results=9999&alt=json-in-script&callback=loadtoc

Java Modding: Execute All the Procedures with Just One App

I must confess that the processes of successfully modding a java/s40 app is quite taxing as one have to switch from one modding app to another — you extract with an app, edit MANIFEST.MF with another, edit the class files with another still, edit the icons/images with yet another before finally packing. Very irksome!

Hey! I stumbled on an app that can fix all these without any stress. It’s a pys60 app called JarEditor.

Detailed Features of JarEditor

The menu of JarEditor

Basically, you can pack, unpack, edit class, text & MF files, edit icons, install and uninstall java apps with JarEditor. Here is a menu-by-menu analysis of the app.

1. Bash JAR

The selection of the menu brings up all the .jar files in E:\JAR Editor\File\. You can choose to install, send, view, extract, rename and delete any of the selected .jar file.

2. Create JAR

This calls up the list of previously unpacked java apps. You choose to create (pack), rename, or delete the selected unpacked app. By selecting “View” in the sub-menu, you can view and edit the properties of MANIFEST.MF, class files and icon.

3. View JAR

When this menu is selected, it calls up a file manager to select a .jar file of your choice. You can mark and extract the files in the .jar app.

4. Install or Remove JAR

As the name implies, you can easily install or uninstall any java app of your choice.

5. Send JAR

Also calls up a manager to select a .jar file for sending via bluetooth.

6. Edit files

This is the last menu, it embodies a mf editor, txt editor, icon editor and icon menu. Just select any one of your choice and navigate to the desired file and carry out the editing process.
For the icon editor you can tweak the icon name, png quality, bit quality, and size.

I don’t think you will encounter any problem whilst using the app because it’s very user friendly.

What have you got to say about this app?
